Did you know the average person spends about a third of their life in bed? With that little statistic comes another; while we slumber you sweat approximately a half pint. Gross thing to consider. So why do we not give our mattress a little more tender love and care? It takes more than changing the sheets every week or two. Mattresses need cleaning too!
Direct Carpet Cleaners would like to offer some tips and advice to clean your mattress.
1. Operation Clean Mattress. Begin by stripping all the sheets, blankets, comforters and pillow cases. According to load size, begin washing your bedding accordingly. While your washing machine is doing their job, pull the vacuum out and start vacuuming your mattress using the hose attachment. This step is crucial for removing dead skin cells, dust and other debris that has collected in the fabric of your mattress. Make sure to hit all seams and divots and thoroughly vacuum every inch of your mattress, including top, sides, and back.
2. Deodorize Mattress. With all the sweat and fun stuff your mattress has accumulated, there could be a production of unique smells emanating from your mattress. To win this battle, sprinkle baking soda over the surface of your mattress. Allow the baking soda to set in for about 30 minutes. Vacuum all the baking soda particles. For an added aroma benefit, add 5 drops or so of your favorite essential oil scent into the baking soda, pre-sift and proceed as stated earlier. This will help your mattress smelling delightful for a week or so. Note, baking soda treatment is designed to neutralize odors, not remove any stains.
3. Mattress Stain removal. Stains have three categories; protein, grease and tannin. One of these types are typically found on your mattress, which is most commonly protein stains. Protein stains are blood, vomit, urine, sweat and other bodily fluids. As with any stain, it is best to tend to it as soon as quickly. Heat sets stains in, so do not use heat. Liquid stains are best removed by blotting. Start by blotting access fluid by gently pat and lifting the rag. Do not rub in, especially in circular motion, as this will push the stain deeper in to the fibers. Fresh stains are easily cleaned by creating a salt, baking soda, and water into a paste- like mixture. Once the paste is prepared gently rub the paste, and allow to sit for 30 min. Brush up the bulk of debris, and apply a cool, damp rag to blot up remaining particles. For tougher stains, use 2 parts hydrogen peroxide and 1 part dish soap. Gently apply the mixture to the offending stain with a toothbrush, and carefully work the stain out. Allow mixture to set for about 5 minutes, and with a clean, damp cloth, wipe up. If you prefer a ready- made detergent, be sure it has enzyme cleaners to work out the protein based stains. Avoid over exposing your mattress to moisture. To help speed the drying process, fans and open windows enhance drying efficiency.
Regarding steam cleaners. Some people may be tempted to use their steam cleaner to tackle this job. Mattresses and moisture breed problems like mold and mildew. If you are one to prefer the deep steam cleaning method, it’s best to let a pro from Direct Carpet Cleaners do the job. With mattress prescribed detergents, and proper training, your mattress can get that deep clean without the worrying about mildew or mold. Tempurpedic or memory mattress foams need to avoid getting wet at all costs. Should you find a spot that needs dealing with, be very frugal with liquids, and use the bare minimum.
4. Flip your Mattress! – Every season we recommend flipping your mattress over, and rotating it counter-clockwise. This will prolong your mattress life by distributing the normal wear and tear.
