Drapery can enhance the interior décor by creating a theme or mood that shows off your inner passion for style. After a while though, dirty hands can grab them, dust can settle on them and allergens can become trapped within them. This may be the reason why you’re still experiencing symptoms from dust mites or airborne contaminants after you’ve scoured the house!
Steam Cleaning Drapes in Your Home
When you steam clean your drapes you are choosing an eco-friendly, nontoxic alternative to chemical cleaning methods. A steam cleaner consists of a water tank, a heating element, a hose and application tools. The heating element will boil the water inside the tank causing the steam to move through the hose out through the application tool. When the tool is held up to the drapes, the steam will release the dirt and debris from the fabric and the application tools will brush them away. It’s important to verify that steam cleaning can be done on your drapes as some fabrics should not be steam cleaned. If the fabric is heat sensitive, then you could damage them.
Steps for How to Clean Your Drapes While Hanging (Without Taking Them Down)
The first thing you should do is test the steam cleaner on an area of the drapes that is hidden before you start. The steam that is coming out of the steam cleaner is extremely hot. Be careful not to burn yourself.
1. Follow the directions for your steam cleaner and fill the tank with water accordingly. It may take several minutes for the water to heat up. When its ready, attach the jet nozzle to the end of the hose.
2. Holding the nozzle 6 inches away from the drapes, begin spraying them with the steam at the top and work your way down. When you come across seams in the drapes, move the nozzle to 2 inches away from the drapes instead of 6 inches. After you have completed the whole front of the drapes, take the nozzle off and put it aside.
3. Next, attach the fabric or drape tool, if your machine has one, to the end of the hose. Holding the hose upright will allow dirty condensation to run back down the hose and into the machine. Touch the cleaning tool at the end of the hose at the top of the drapes and move the tool slowly down the drape panel starting at the top.
4. Continue this until you’ve completed the front surface of the drapes and repeat the entire process on the back of the drapes as well. Allow them to dry completely.

Dirty curtains can also attract insects and pests like bed bugs that will lay eggs and spread to other parts of your home.
